Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Wayfinding for London’s Olympic Park

In 2012, the London Legacy Development Corporation commissioned Applied to create a wayfinding strategy for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, a sporting precinct built for the Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

Situated in east London, the community park contains the athletes’ Olympic Village and world-class sporting venues. Applied met with over 40 stakeholder groups to understand the project requirements and consider how the Legible London system could be adapted for this unique leisure environment.

Applied’s designs align with the Park brand, which draws on the concept of ‘engineered nature’. As well as developing the wayfinding within the Park, the Applied team provided procurement and fabrication support, and implementation oversight.

Key objectives for the strategy:

Create a safe and accessible environment.

Establish an uncluttered, legible landscape.

Promote an integrated experience of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and reinforce the brand identity.

Improve connectivity for local visitors from the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Using expert knowledge

It was important to understand the original intent of the project and develop the strategy using Applied’s expert knowledge of Legible London.

A seamless integration was achieved that adapted the Legible London system for a leisure environment and included both directional and informational elements.

Integrated design

The design was created to be timeless and long-lasting.

Sensitive selection of materials and meticulous detailing harmonise the signage with the ‘urban park’ environment.

Multiple connections

The Park map clearly shows the transportation connections available, including London underground and overground, DLR and rail services.
