About Applied

Applied Information Group is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary design consultancy. We help businesses and public agencies improve the experience and understanding of spaces for their customers and citizens.

We work internationally for blue chip clients providing a unique set of skills specializing in planning and designing information systems for navigating and enjoying buildings, campuses, transit networks and cities. From our offices in London, San Francisco, Vancouver and Seoul, we  design signs, maps, screens and digital applications and produce everything needed from brand guidelines to industrial design specifications, and governance strategies to smartphone apps.

About the role

Applied is expanding our internship program, and we’re looking for recent graduates to work with our San Francisco based team.

Applied is a hub for creatives who have an eye for design, who think strategically, and who want to be involved in projects from inception to implementation. An Applied Internship is a great opportunity for you to develop your talents and gain valuable experience at a world-class company.

We value our interns and the skills, enthusiasm, insight, and perspective that they bring to our clients projects. A successful applicant would join a long list of interns who have built successful careers at Applied and other studios.

Although you’d be based in San Francisco, your projects will be anywhere in the world. We are currently working with clients in seven time zones, in cities, districts, transport networks, airports, campuses, complexes, open spaces and buildings, for some of the biggest and smallest companies in the world. All are complex, and all are looking for us to help them.

Key responsibilities

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting design teams across all stages of a project, from early research and concept development through to delivery and implementation.
  • Producing clear, well-crafted visual and information design outputs, including diagrams, layouts, presentations, and wayfinding concepts.
  • Assisting with research and synthesis of insights related to people, places, and systems.
  • Preparing presentation materials for internal reviews and client-facing workshops.
  • Contributing ideas and perspectives to team discussions, critiques, and design reviews.
  • Independently executing artwork updates and reporting task progress to team members.
  • Helping maintain high standards of quality, consistency, and attention to detail across all outputs

About you

You might be studying or have qualifications in graphic design, product, industrial design, information design, architecture, UX/UI design, or service design. You are likely interested in urban planning, behavioral science, accessible design, or emerging technologies. If you have talent, care about people and places, then we don’t mind what course.

You will need to be comfortable using Mac products and have experience with Adobe Creative Suite and office suites such as Google or Microsoft Office.

You must have a keen graphic and typographic eye and attention to detail, a desire and dedication to deliver high quality information and design throughout the world.

Requirements

  • Confidence in Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with layout, diagramming, and visual storytelling.
  • Comfortable working digitally across Mac, cloud-based tools, and collaborative platforms.
  • Interest in cities, mobility, behavior change, accessibility, and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to manage ambiguity, ask thoughtful questions, and iterate on feedback.
  • A portfolio (academic or professional) that shows curiosity, rigor, and clarity of thinking.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues in the UK and Europe.

The duration

Three months. This is a paid internship opportunity, that will also include 4.5 days of PTO.

Location

Please only apply if you are able to work in the San Francisco office. This role requires working from the office at least three days per week.
